Following in the footsteps of Netflix, SVOD platform Disney + announced on May 10 the launch of a new low-cost subscription service including advertising. Already available in the US since the end of 2022, this offer will be available in Europe by the end of 2023. [1] .
At the launch of this new subscription in the US, the platform raised the price of a classic subscription from $7.99 to $10.99. This considerable increase will certainly be reflected in France. As a result, the classic subscription will rise from €8.99 to €11.99. [2]. It's a significant increase, and one that users are dreading.
This new offer will force users to watch commercials, which will be broadcast as follows: at the start of a film or series, four 15- to 30-second commercials can be broadcast over a one-hour period. An offer that remains unpleasant for the French. In fact, according to a study conducted by Iligo, 75% of French people appreciate ad-free monthly subscriptions and don't want to watch them. [3].
To save money and continue to pay for your Disney + subscription at a lower cost and without advertising, other solutions exist.
This is the case with the Spliiit platform, Spliiit allows users to share the cost of their subscriptions between several users by offering the remaining places on their subscriptions in order to split the monthly costs.
"With this offer bringing in advertisements, Disney+ risks increasing its subscription prices. Users will therefore be forced to pay for a more expensive subscription while being disturbed by advertisements during their viewing. The French already rejected the introduction of ads on other platforms, so with a price increase of nearly €3, they will certainly refuse to subscribe to a service that includes advertising. With Spliiit, we allow our users to share their Disney+ subscription by dividing the monthly costs. This means that the subscription costs €2.71 per user, which represents a real saving," explains Guillaume Lochard, co-founder of Spliiit.
